The most common forms of alopecia that effect African heritage women are
androgenetic, traction, and chemical. These types of hair loss range from mild to
devastating. It is these types of hair losses for which Ms Lola specifically designs
lace wigs and hair units.
Androgenetic alopecia is a hereditary pattern baldness that occurs in both men
and women. Although more pronounced in men, this type of hair loss often begins
as early as the 20s in women. It effects the sides and crown of the head and can
be a frightening blow to a woman’s self-esteem.
Traumatic alopecia is most common among African-American women. This type
of hair loss results from prolonged use of hair rollers, weaves, twists, locks, or
cornrows. The first sign of traction alopecia is thinning above the ears and around
the forehead. Partial or complete regrowth of hair can follow, but permanent loss
of hair often occurs when the roots of the hairs become severely damage.
Chemical Alopecia resembles traumatic alopecia, as scarring is present,
however the cause is chemical rather than hereditary. Abuse of caustic
commercial relaxer products is the most common culprit. The devastating result is
unnecessary hair loss that is more and more prevalent in young girls. This condition
is irreversible.
